Why is it important to get my brakes serviced?
Brakes are one of the most important components on your vehicle. You need the confidence of knowing that when you press your foot to the brake, your vehicle is going to stop. That's why it's important to keep these tips in mind to help keep your brakes functioning properly.

  • Have your brakes checked here at Roy 66 Auto Repair at least once a year — more often if you drive frequently in city traffic or live in a hilly area.
  • Never drive with the parking brake on.
  • If you hear a high-pitched squeak when you use the brakes, have them checked.
  • If you hear a scratching or grinding noise when not braking, this also can be a sign of a brake or bearing issue and should be inspected immediately.
  • Check your brake fluid along with other car fluids. If you have to add fluid more than once every few months, you may have a leak.
  • Warped rotors or brake pedal unbalance may cause your steering wheel to shake, and affect your steering and brake performance-all safety factors in your driving.

Brake pads, shoes, drums, and rotors are made of materials that wear down from heat and friction, even under normal driving conditions. Over time, these same wear issues can also affect the brake’s hydraulic components including calipers, wheel cylinders, and brake hoses. Failure of these brake components can lead to costly repairs and loss of braking.

How often should I get my brakes checked?

It’s important to have your brakes checked at least once a year to keep them responsive and to help avoid costly replacements. In Utah, most cars require an annual safety inspection, and your brake system is one of the safety items that is checked. However, you should have your brakes checked immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Your brakes are continuously squeaking, squealing, or grinding.
  • Your brake or anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light comes on.
  • Your car jerks or pulls to one side when braking.
  • You need to pump your brakes for them to work properly.
  • Your brake pedal feels unusually soft and spongy or hard.
  • You notice brake fluid leaks around the wheels or engine compartment.
